How I have Personalized Mozilla Firefox Browser??

I am in my transition period between my B.TECH and first job. I spend ample amount of time on my computer doing many geeks stuff which look stupid to my brother!! But I like these so called "crap" - experimenting and searching!! Many of my friends have common questions regarding browsers to which I keep on explaining them the tits and bits. Some are:-

1. How I have customized Mozilla Firefox?? It is really fast!!

2. Which one is better IE7 (Internet Explorer 7) or Firefox?

3. How come your computer (having low configuration) runs so smoothly??

I became an ardent fan of Firefox since 2006 when I left IE and switched to Firefox. With all its add-ons and comfortable tab scrolling features it is above IE. There are more than 5000 add-ons you can add to Firefox, which makes it an indispensable browser to computer users. IE after the launch of IE7 has many new features, but it is still system heavy. Limited add-ons , not so easy TAB scrolling and comparatively slow speed , make it less user friendly .If you haven't experienced the charisma of Firefox go, download Firefox 3.0 , customize it (I will show you some) and see the difference yourself. Reply for the third question will answer later.

How I have customized Firefox Browser??

I like to share some basic changes u can adopt to make Firefox better than any browser.

Before that enjoy this small trick on magazines: -

Tips for making Firefox fast as never before:-

Here is the trick for Mozilla Firefox only:-

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true

network.http.max-connections – 48

network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4

network.http.pipelining – true

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100

network.http.proxy.pipelining – true

network.http.request.timeout – 300

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.

Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".

This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-25 times faster now.

NOTE :- 1. This works well till Firefox 2.0.0.14, not yet tested on Firefox 3.0

2. At first instance it might look that information are coming in bits , but u will realize that they are coming at really good speed , try opening "Times Of India" home page

Tip to reduce RAM requirement for Firefox:

Generally Firefox with all its add- ons and numerous tab open at one time consume a large part of your RAM, and may hang frequently. If you regularly browse through Firefox and keep on maximizing - minimizing browser, then this is a must for you.

What this does is when you minimize Firefox instead of storing data in RAM it shifts it to Hard Drive (hard disk) and RAM use decreases rapidly, when you again maximize it , it only uses 70% of the RAM previously used …cool stuff …keep on doing this to decrease RAM space…don’t need to increase your RAM anymore thinking that Firefox need it more n more…moreover it does not slow down Firefox .

Steps:-

1. In Firefox: enter “about:config” in the location bar, right click mouse at a empty space ->go to New ->Boolean -> Type "config.trim_on_minimize" and set the value "True".

2. Check yourself : Open firefox -open pages (use it as you do normally) - >open Windows task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) - > locate "firefox.exe" -> note down the RAM requirement -> minimize Firefox and see the RAM requirement -> keep on doing to see the result .

NOTE : If this want to revert back to normal then just make the value "false" . Comment on how you like the tip .

Add-ons which are Indispensable:

1. Adblock Plus:-

“Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them."

With a weekly download of 7,54,142 this is arguably the best add-on of Firefox . It stops internet traffic of adds , banners which slows down the speed of page downloading , thus making pages to download at fast speed . It restricts all type of adult adds from flashing at your page .

Download it from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865#reviews

2. Tab Mix Plus:-

Personally I cannot do without this feature. Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager with crash recovery that can save and restore combinations of opened tabs and windows.

Its Mouse Gesture command scrolls between tabs with clicking. Just keep the mouse cursor over the Tab you want to select and it will switch over it.

Download it: - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122

3. Free download Manager Plug-in:-

A freeware without any licensing required - excellent software to manage your download. It has a very good in-built scheduler to download any item you want at any time you prefer. Download the latest version from www.download.com

Optional add-ons:-

1. Stop Autoplay: Disable all auto play of the embedded music and movie. Start videos as and when you want it. Try it on You Tube.

2. Taboo 0.2: Save images of your favorite pages which you want to read later. Don’t have to bookmark every page. Just Taboo it.

3. RSS Ticker: Scroll your RSS feed in a toolbar.

Download all these add-ons from Mozilla Firefox add-ons site .Believe me whichever add-ons you need, its there for u -Just search it.

NOTE: ALL ADD-ONS OF MOZILL A ARE FREE OF COST. THERE SIZE IS GENERALLY IN "KB”. IT TAKES LESS THAN 2 MIN TO DOWNLOAD THEM.

THEY ARE NOT AT ALL SYSTEM HEAVY.

Go Directly to Your Favorite Sites

You can add keywords to your bookmarks for easier and faster access. From the Library, just add a short keyword in the keyword field, and you’ll be able to access that bookmark by simply typing that keyword into the address bar. For example, you could give your del.icio.us account the “links” keyword, and from then on simply typing “links” into the address bar will take you right there.

Let me explain one more example: You want to open Times of India regularly. Bookmark the main page -> Go to Bookmark -> Go to Times Of India -> Right click to properties -> add a keyword say "toi" and ok. Now whenever you want to open TOI, just press "Ctrl+L"(go to heading) and write "toi" +press Enter. You can have access to any number of pages like this.

Read Full Articles on The Wall Street Journal Without a Subscription

You can read any subscriber-only articles published in the Wall Street Journal newspaper (online edition) if you have Firefox ( ) and an awesome extension called Firebug (that allows inline HTML editing).

Following are the steps involved to bypass the WSJ yearly subscription wall:

Step 1: Open the Wall Street Journal story web page that you want to read but can't because it's behind the subscription firewall.

Step 2: Add the text mod=googlenews_wsj to URL immediately following the .html filename. See example below:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB11874773.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Step 3: Open news.google.com and press Ctrl+Shift+C - Hover the mouse over any random news headline and click once to the enter the HTML editing mode in Firebug.

Now change the link of that Google News story in the Firebug window to the one we created in Step 2. [change the "href" attribute of "a" tag] Press enter.

Click the modified link on the Google News homepage and you'll immediately get access to the full article on WSJ, not just the two-para summary.

NOTE: - THIS BLOG MIGHT NOT BE OF MUCH USE TO VERY ADVANCE USERS OF FIREFOX, BEGINNERS AND INTERMEDIATES WILL BE BENEFITED.

I HAVE EXPERIMENTED ALL TRICKS AND FUNDAS BEFORE WRITING.
